Welcome to Martial Arts Carolina

We offer 3 effective martial art programs TaeKwonDo American Hapkido Combatives and American Arnis Concepts. When combined the result is an extremely comprehensive self defense system.

Our TaeKwonDo program - A Korean "stand up" martial art - combines traditional & artistic techniques and formwork with dynamic & highly energetic blocking, hand striking, kicking, aerial attacks, self defense techniques and free-sparring.

Our American Hapkido Combatives program  was developed by PROMAA (Pacific Rim Originating Martial Arts Association). Hapkido combines hand to hand combative skills such as joint manipulation, balance disruption, and throws.

American Arnis Concepts is a synthesis of Filipino combative techniques that includes empty hand, stick and edged weapons. This is a great compliment to Martial Art Carolina’s stand up fighting and joint locking arts. Students in this class will practice with rattan sticks; aluminum training knives and padded weapons. This is a fast paced, energy intensive class. A great way to lose weight and learn self-defense - the Filipino way!

All programs teach striking, blocking & kicking, joint locking, basic ground grappling & basic weapons disarming in a safe, fun, and disciplined environment.

Please check the school's schedule for your class time.

 Welcome Shihan Mayer

Mint Hill’s oldest martial art school, Martial Arts Carolina is adding a new instructor and program to its already popular curriculum of Taekwondo and Hapkido. Martial Arts Carolina is proud to announce the addition of master level instructor, Shihan John Mayer to its staff. Shihan Mayer will bring the Philippine art of Arnis to Martial Arts Carolina starting this January. Arnis is a weapon-based system consisting of single and double stick as well as edged weapons. However, it also has its own share of unique empty-hand techniques. This will be a practical street style self-defense approach for weapons use. This provides the participants with an exciting workout that compliments Martial Arts Carolina’s other programs.

Shihan Mayer has over 27 years in the martial arts holding advanced ranks in several styles. Among these is the title of “Shihan” or “teacher of teachers”. He is a regular instructor at the world famous “Karate College” martial art camp held every summer in Radford, VA. He has 17 years of law enforcement experience and is working on his Doctoral degree in Criminology. Shihan Mayer just spent the last three years living in Asia and has recently relocated to Matthews, NC with his wife and two children.

We are truly honored to have someone of Shihan Mayer’s caliber at our school. We have had a relationship with him for the past several years through the PROMAA organization. To have him he as a regular instructor is truly a blessing for not only Martial Art Carolina but the Mint Hill and Matthews’s community as a whole. You are all invited to check out Shihan Mayer’s class on Thursday’s from 7:45 – 8:45 pm starting January 5th. We promise you won’t be disappointed.
